In March 1982, Argentine scrap metal workers landed at Leith Harbour, in South Georgia, and raised the Argentine flag. A fortnight later, Argentine troops invaded the Falklands Islands, triggering a 74-day conflict with Britain.
On the 5th April 1982, a large British task force set out on a 7500 mile journey to liberate the group of tiny windswept islands in the South Atlantic. On 1st May began the biggest naval action to take place since the Second World War - more than 1000 men lost their lives.
Since then, the Falkland Islands have flourished, both economically and socially, and are still a dependent territory of Britain, and will remain so for as long as the Islanders wish.
Our hearts and prayers go out to all the brave soldiers who lost there lives preserving our way of life.
